Mastercard – The Leadership Challenge®

The Challenge:

A global business function within the organization was working to align its international teams around a unified strategic vision. At the same time, it sought to elevate the leadership capabilities of its technically skilled leaders—many of whom were new to leading people. The goal was to build a culture where people-first leadership behaviors became the norm, regardless of geography, while strengthening alignment and engagement across the function.

The Solution:

To meet these needs, HRD* designed and facilitated a 6-month virtual development experience rooted in The Leadership Challenge® model. The program focused on cultivating core leadership behaviors that drive engagement, trust, and accountability. It included pre- and post-assessments, mentoring, experiential learning, and peer accountability partnerships to create a high-impact and lasting experience.

The program reached 101 global leaders across four cohorts in regions including New York, St. Louis, Australia, the UK, Dublin, Poland, Pune, and Vadodara—ensuring consistency in development while honoring cultural and regional nuance.


The Results:

• 76% of participants reported applying core leadership behaviors more frequently than they did prior to the program

• Leaders demonstrated stronger alignment with the function’s shared vision

• Peer mentoring and accountability partnerships increased cross-regional connection and collaboration

• Employee engagement scores rose significantly—becoming the highest across the entire organization

• Technical leaders reported greater confidence and clarity in managing people, not just processes
